VaporMax: At the origin of the design

Designed in Europe

The Air VaporMax opens a new era of Nike innovation. The designers started by re-engineering the Air unit so it was directly connected to the upper. “That was the biggest challenge,” says senior footwear designer Tom Minami, but it was worth it. “Without a midsole or sockliner, you get to experience the feeling of Air cushioning again.” In previous Air Max models, the goal was to cram as many Air units into the sole as possible, but the VaporMax focuses on using the technology more efficiently. “When you put your foot down, each lug pushes into the Air unit, increasing the pressure,” Elder says. “When you lift your foot off, the pressure is released, which creates even more responsive cushioning.” After working on the shoe for seven years, Elder and Minami are excited to see what the future holds. “I’m super proud of the product,” Elder says. “This new approach is a real turning point for Air technology, and for Nike.”
